Alternative Youth Radio (AYR) FM98.9MHz is today one of the only Youth and public access radios in Lofa county providing local and national coverage on a regular basis on FM. It serves as a “community” broadcaster. AYR is a unique mix of a not-for-profit public service radio that pursues fee-for-service activities to generate income to cover its annual expenses.
Alternative Youth Radio offers programs on current affairs and news, it broadcasts 21 hours 30 minutes a day (3:00am – 2:00pm and 3:30pm – 2:00
am daily) in 5 Liberian languages as well as English and Liberian English. AYR offers a social media platform with audio uploading which is used by people in the Diaspora. The station currently has reduced its staff from 20 to 12 due to financial constraints. Staffs are paid stipend for services as an additional cost saving measure.
Alternative Youth Radio is exceptional within rural Liberia. It is the only independent youth radio and training medium in Lofa County – rural Liberia. The station broadcasts independent news and information as well as training in English, Liberian English, and 5 others Liberian languages (Kissi, Kpelleh, Lorma, Mandingo and Mano), most of which are spoken by person within the areas broadcast covering.
